HIV (human immunodeficiency virus)
is the virus that causes AIDS. This virus may be passed from one person
to another when infected blood, semen, or vaginal secretions come in
contact with an uninfected persons broken skin or mucous membranes. HIV
and AIDS are about life — your life and the lives of other people.
Do you have questions or concerns about HIV?
Who is affected by HIV and AIDS?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC), in the United States at the end of 2002:
An estimated 506,154 people were living with HIV infection or AIDS.
500,746 were adults and teens.
5,408 children were younger than age 13.
Of all those living with AIDS:
42% were black.
37% were white.
20% were Hispanic.
1% were Asian/Pacific Islanders.
Less than 1% were Indian/Alaska Native.
Affects on women:
Men who have sex with men and women
are a "significant bridge for HIV to women," the CDC's new data suggest.
Black and Latino men face particular stigma from their communities if
they admit to having sex with other men. This makes it difficult to
reach them with HIV/STD prevention messages — and to study them.
